Hair products that are traditionally used in hair salons are normally made with harsh chemicals that the human body sometimes has a hard time dealing with.  Processes have become quicker over the years, using chemicals to replace more time consuming processes that were mostly heat driven.  Unfortunately, allergic reactions are becoming more and more common to these products.  Simply put,  they are not natural to the body, and over time, your body may build try to reject them.  This is most common with hair color systems, but can also be the case with perms and hair straighteners.  The standard method for permanent hair color most commonly uses a chemical called p-Phenylenediamine (PPD for short), with another chemical that has to create the chemical reaction that binds these chemicals, thus changing the color of your hair.  The most common reagent for this is cobalt.  Both chemicals are exceptionally harsh, and can be very toxic.
